Overview

The A.I. Accelerated Computing Lab at Hallym University studies how to make deep learning both intelligent and efficient — from learning algorithms that stay robust with limited or imbalanced labels, to the hardware and systems that run them quickly and at low energy on GPUs, FPGAs, and edge devices.

Our work spans the full stack: medical and biosignal AI, robust and label-efficient learning, applied computer vision, energy-aware model compression and accelerator design, and low-power reliable digital hardware. The directions below summarize our main themes, each grounded in the lab’s publications.

Medical & Biosignal AI

A central and long-running line of our research applies deep learning to clinical decision support, with a particular focus on automatic sleep stage classification and sleep-disorder analysis.

We have constructed standardized image-based polysomnography (PSG) databases and multi-institutional deep learning pipelines for sleep staging, analyzed Transformer attention behavior to improve generalization, and developed models for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity — including recent PSG-free approaches that estimate severity from multi-view facial imaging.

Robust & Label-Efficient Learning

Real-world data is imbalanced, weakly labeled, and drawn from shifting distributions. We develop semi-supervised and domain-generalization methods that remain accurate under these conditions.

Recent work includes class-aware adaptive thresholding for semi-supervised domain generalization, separated and independent contrastive learning for long-tailed and imbalanced datasets, and a survey of domain generalization for semantic segmentation.

We turn these learning methods into deployable vision systems for real applications:

  • Road hazard & damage detection — real-time inference frameworks and standardized labeling protocols, recognized at the Optimized Road Damage Detection Challenge (IEEE BigData, ICCE-Asia).

  • Face analysis — presentation-attack (anti-spoofing) detection with deformable convolutions, and identity-preserving face frontalization (PoseDefCycleGAN).

  • Segmentation — high-precision multi-decoder segmentation using pseudo depth maps and efficient training strategies.

Reliable Hardware & High-Performance Computing

The lab’s systems foundation is low-power, reliable digital design together with high-performance computing.

On the hardware side, we study globally-asynchronous locally-synchronous (GALS) and multi-frequency clocking for EMI and switching-noise reduction, asynchronous and clockless circuits for low-voltage energy efficiency, adaptive frequency scaling with in-situ timing detectors, approximate multipliers for error-tolerant applications, and error-resilient flip-flops and self-checking logic on FPGAs.

On the computing side, we optimize compute-intensive GPU workloads — notably real-time software ultrasound beamforming and B-mode imaging — analyzing how optimization strategies and voltage/frequency scaling affect performance, power, and energy.
